Verdict

The iPhone 16 Pro Max has aged well. Its large 120Hz display, strong A18 Pro performance, excellent video tools and 5x telephoto remain premium, making it a smart buy when priced meaningfully below the iPhone 17 Pro Max.

The iPhone 16 Pro Max is no longer Apple’s newest flagship, but its core hardware remains firmly premium. The 6.9-inch Super Retina XDR OLED supports ProMotion up to 120Hz, giving it the same large-screen fluidity expected from Apple’s Pro line. Its titanium construction and 227g weight make it substantial, but the size also contributes to excellent battery endurance.

The A18 Pro chip remains more than capable for current iOS workloads, high-end games and demanding video applications. Apple’s long software-support history means buying the phone a generation late does not suddenly make it short-lived.

Cameras are still a major strength. The system combines a 48MP main camera, 48MP ultrawide and 12MP 5x telephoto. Camera Control adds a dedicated physical interface for launching and adjusting camera functions, while Apple’s video quality and workflow support remain among the strongest in smartphones.

The iPhone 17 Pro Max improves the formula with newer thermal engineering and a more ambitious triple-48MP system, so buyers should not ignore the replacement. The question is whether those improvements are worth the price difference. If retailers discount the iPhone 16 Pro Max substantially, the older phone retains nearly all the qualities that made it a premium flagship.

It is particularly appealing to users upgrading from much older iPhones who want a large screen, strong battery life and a mature Pro camera system without paying the newest-model premium. Buyers already using an iPhone 16 Pro Max have little reason to replace it unless specific 17-series upgrades matter to them.

Buying advice

Buy the iPhone 16 Pro Max if you want a large Pro iPhone and can save substantially versus the 17 Pro Max. Choose the newer model if its improved telephoto flexibility, thermals and battery gains justify the extra cost.
