Verdict
The OnePlus Open remains one of the most convincing first-generation foldable efforts ever released. Its displays, cameras and multitasking are excellent, but its IPX4 protection, lack of wireless charging and older Snapdragon platform now show its age beside newer foldables.
The OnePlus Open arrived as a surprisingly mature foldable and still holds up well because OnePlus focused on the basics. The 7.82-inch inner display and 6.31-inch cover screen both run at up to 120Hz, and the outer display has conventional proportions that make the phone easy to use without opening it constantly.
Open Canvas remains one of the device’s smartest ideas. Instead of treating multitasking as a simple split-screen exercise, it lets multiple apps sit in a wider virtual workspace, making better use of the folding display. That software advantage is paired with 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage, so the phone still feels capable for productivity.
The camera hardware is also stronger than many early foldables. A 48MP main camera, 48MP ultrawide and 64MP 3x periscope give the Open genuine flexibility, especially compared with foldables that treated cameras as secondary. Wired charging at 67W is fast, although the complete absence of wireless charging is harder to accept on a premium device.
Age is now the main issue. Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 remains quick, but newer foldables are faster, tougher and often better sealed. The OnePlus Open is still easy to recommend at the right price; it is simply no longer the obvious class leader it once was.
